Sandy's
artworks reflect her interests. She often paints the birds and
wildlife native to the upper Midwest and enjoys hiking in the hardwood
forests and the Mississippi river bluffs not far from her Rochester,
Minnesota home. An avid birdwatcher, she also gathers reference
material from her backyard birdfeeders and wildflower gardens which are
visible from her studio window.
Antique stoneware is
another of Sandy's interests. An older brother introduced her to the
charm of old Red Wing stoneware which was produced in the Red Wing,
Minnesota area in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Once commonly used
in every home, these lost treasures are still found at farm auctions
and yard sales. Sandy creates a “Red Wing” or
“antique” painting a few times a year. She sometimes
manages to add a bird to the composition, combining both her interests.
Sandy's detailed
subjects catch the eye and invite close inspection. At the same
time her backgrounds are often painted in a slightly looser technique
– one that leaves room for exploration and interpretation.
The majority of Sandy's original works are painted in acrylics
–but are often mistaken for oils or watercolors.
